Seven Dimensions Of Wellness

The Prime Minister Boris Johnson today announced spending plans to build, rebuild, and improve 40 hospitals by 2030. However, the mental health provision allocated is unclear, and falls far short of urgent need for improvement across the NHS. When you’re living with a mental health problem, having access to the right information is vital. Vivienne blogs about how her mental health has been affected by lockdown, Black Lives Matter and being a frontline mental health worker.

This approach also helps a great deal with managing and recovering from mental illness. Taking care of your physical health is scientifically shown to improve mental wellbeing, and vice versa. The promotion of health is also affected by the differences in the definition of health.

Other times, an environmental trigger can cause illness in a person who has an increased genetic risk of a particular disease. It is harder to define mental health than physical health because many psychological diagnoses depend on an individual’s perception of their experience. For example, mental illness, such as depression, may increase the risk of drug use disorders, according to a 2008 study. People with better financial health, for example, may worry less about finances and have the means to buy fresh food more regularly.

This isn’t always easy, but having a strong support network to help you through the difficult times is a great sign and source of emotional wellness. Good physical health can work in tandem with mental health to improve a person’s overall quality of life. Physical well-being involves pursuing a healthful lifestyle to decrease the risk of disease. Maintaining physical fitness, for example, can protect and develop the endurance of a person’s breathing and heart function, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition. Studies are showing more and more that a holistic approach to health – linking physical, social, emotional, and mental health – is necessary for mental wellbeing.

For instance, people reported that it would be almost as unusual to see someone doing jumping jacks in an airport as someone setting a car on fire! This might stop people from thinking about everyday opportunities for exercise.

Someone who makes the effort to take care of themselves physically, by eating well, exercising, and getting enough sleep, is likely to be someone who enjoys a sense of purpose in their life. Someone who feels emotionally strained is far less likely to be opting in for healthy snacks and smoothies, or enjoying a leisurely walk. As we’ve discussed, emotional and physical health are closely linked, so taking care of one is taking care of the other.
